MILITARY VETERANS - Your ID Card Is At Risk For Identity Theft

Are you a Veteran, or know anyone who is ? This is something every VA Card holder should be aware about. As many Veterans carry a ID Card issued by the Department of Veteran Affairs. This ID is used each time we go into the VA Hospitals when we check in. There is a news article that I just seen that shows that almost any bar code reader, even on your cell phone can reveal the embeded information including your Social Security Number.

The bar code is located to the far right of the ID card, which I have covered in this photo to protect my information.

We Veterans should protect this card as we would protect out actual Social Security card as an effort to prevent being a subject to Identity Theft.

It appears that the that this information is somewhere on the www.VA.gov website. I looked and didn't immediatly see the warning notice.  Check out this news clip from Florida. I'm curious as to how many actually knew this was there.

Looks like they are working on the next generation ID Card that will not reveal this Social Security Number, However it will be next year before the new card is rolled out.

On a bright note: Veterans to Receive 1.5 Percent Cost-of-Living Increase - Veterans, their families and survivors receiving disability compensation and pension benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs will receive a 1.5 percent cost-of-living increase in their monthly payments beginning Jan. 1, 2014. (12/4/13)
